What is the HPS Seed Exchange?

Since the fall and winter of 1993-94, the Seed Exchange has been one of the activities that makes HPS/MAG stand out from all of the other plant societies in the mid-Atlantic region. Each year, as the fruiting season for a plant comes to an end, dedicated Society members collect the seeds and forward them, along with a description of the plant, to the Seed Exchange Team. The information is then used to create the Seed Exchange Catalog, listing more than 1,000 types of seed each year.

In early January, Society members can order seeds for a nominal fee. Later in January and February, dozens of volunteers meet at the Henry Foundation to sort and divide seed into packets to satisfy the orders. Thousands of work hours and volumes of gardening knowledge is used to provide this valuable exchange of plants

Anyone can submit seeds or volunteer to clean and sort seeds. Want to join in on the fun? Contact For more information about the Exchange, read this Seed Exchange Article from a past HPS Newsletter.

2014-15 HPS Seed Exchange Workshops

Join us for the cleaning and packaging workshops at the Henry Foundation in Gladwyne, PA, held 10:002:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays starting January 20 and continuing into early February. To schedule your workshop volunteer services, please contact our friendly volunteer coordinator Polly Garnett,, 610-695-9135.

In addition to learning at least one new thing about seeds and propagation, you can renew old friendships, hear the latest news, describe the progress in your own garden, and review the great gardens that you had the opportunity to visit in the past year. Bring a lunch for yourself and maybe a snack to share. Coffee, tea, and water are provided.
