A Visit to Stoneybrook – Robert and Mary Anne Grenfell’s Chester County Garden

Robert and Mary Anne are sharing their Wilmington garden with us on June 6th for the Members’ Garden Tour. On this pop-up you can come to see their one-acre garden in Northern Chester County – Stoneybrook. This property has been featured on Chester County Days and will be featured on the PA Garden Party, the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania’s statewide garden tour on June 20 & 27. Many of you know Robert from the Philadelphia Flower Show. He served as Chair of Competitive Classes in 2024 and 2025.

Stoneybrook’s circa 1800 stone house sits in the corner of a sunny, oneacre clearing surrounded by woodland. Robert’s grandmother created vegetable and flower gardens on the property and since 1991, Robert has been expanding the gardens, adding many new beds and scores of new species. The gardens include a white garden, a Japanese style moss garden, island beds featuring collections of hostas, dwarf conifers, ornamental grasses and native perennials, and a grove of Japanese maples, some unique and choice. As you stroll through the gardens, look for found-object sculptures along the way. Throughout the seasons, the garden transforms in color and texture, offering year-round interest and habitats for wildlife.
