Elizabeth Shippen GreenPhiladelphia’s booming publishing industry resulted in the training of many gifted artists, including several women, who produced evocative images of gardens to an eager national audience of magazine consumers in the early 20th Century.  We will learn more about several artists including the “Red Rose Girls” who lived and worked together on a Villanova, PA compound, and in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia.

This slide lecture by amateur historian, architect and garden designer Eric Sternfels will showcase many of the garden illustrations which created an aspirational Vision of American country life.  What can these images teach us about our own gardens, or our own garden photography, and whether the lifestyle they depict are anachronistic or something worth striving for today?

No charge for HPS or Haverford Arboretum members; $10.00 for others. No limit but registration required.  To register, click here.
