Visit HPS/MAG Grant Recipient Riverbend Environmental Education Center

Meet in the Visitor Center at 10:00 AM for a 1.5 hour guided hike.

Riverbend Environmental Education Center, located at the very end of Spring Mill Road, is named for the bend in the Schuylkill River which defines the preserve's farthest border. Near the entrance to the preserve is a lovely tributary known as Saw Mill Run, dotted with metamorphosed schist, consisting of gneiss stones and boulders. Steep topography throughout Riverbend adds to the site’s beauty.

Riverbend’s diverse habitats include meadows, woodlands, and ponds, making it an ideal site for nature study and exploration. The mission of the Environmental Education Center is to teach environmental principles to children in Southeastern Pennsylvania by helping these young explorers connect with nature.

Riverbend Environmental Education Center has received multiple Hardy Plant Society/Mid-Atlantic Group grants during the last decade. These grants have helped the dedicated staff, interns and volunteers restore the property’s woodlands and create a more beautiful and diverse environment of native plant species. The funded projects have allowed Riverbend to create pollinator habitats, address stormwater erosion issues, spread the word about the benefits of native plants, and most recently begin propagating their own native plants and trees.

Join Riverbend's Habitat and Volunteer Manager Lorna Atkinson on Monday, May 9 (rain date Friday, May 13) at 10:00 AM for a hike around the preserve to tour some of the projects HPS/MAG grant funding has helped support and see what is in bloom at this time of year. Please wear sturdy boots and bring a filled water bottle. We will be hiking on a sloped trail, so you may also want to bring a walking stick or poles.

Members Only. This is a free event, but registration is required. Registration is closed.

We will follow the COVID protocol of our host site. All attendees must bring a mask, in case it is required.
