Visit the former gardens of the once nationally famous Red Rose Girls, a trio of early 20th Century illustrators plus their fourth partner who lovingly tended these gardens designed by the Olmsted firm, the successor of America’s seminal Landscape Architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. We’ll learn some history of these women and their community’s enclave of stone and stucco residences with lushly developed gardens which were depicted in the artists’ illustrations as an idyllic, but achievable country life in America. After hearing stories about the people, we will take a stroll to ‘The French Village,” an adjacent cluster of exquisitely designed homes built in the 1920’s, overlooking Wissahickon parkland. We will learn of the developer’s distinctive approach to social engineering that shaped this far Northwest Philadelphia neighborhood.
