A Collectors Garden in Chestnut Hill, PA

Please join us as we visit a collectors garden in Chestnut Hill, Pa for a guided walking tour where the owner will point out varieties of plants not commonly found and why she chose them. She will explain reasons for siting others in certain places one might not usually consider and how she handled her sloping yard so well.

The property owner is a landscape professional who demonstrates her botanical, horticultural and design passions on densely planted grounds that she has been cultivating and re-envisioning for decades. After years of these gardens having been toured by a variety of horticultural clubs and organizations, the property was given the distinction of being identified as an ''important American residential garden'' by the Smithsonian Institute.

Without the formality of clipped hedges or walls, it is the crisp features of a 20th century Modern house, bluestone terraces, and a lap pool that play against a naturalistic planting style which settles gracefully into the Wissahickon hillside landscape. Take your time to observe the many unusual specimen trees and shrubs throughout the property. They harmonize with layered plantings of perennials and bulbs to offer moments of botanical bliss in subtle ways. But also of great interest are collections of artfully composed troughs, and seasonally planted containers showing off the gardener's personal style. This tour occurs during her busy season and she hopes you will understand if everything is not ''perfect''.

Note: We hope you take special care in walking through these private gardens where paths include steps for minor level changes as well as irregular stone stairways that require appropriate footwear and good balance.
