Private Garden Visit #1: Linda's Garden in Elkins Park

Have you ever gone on a private garden tour and thought to yourself: “I would love to just sit myself down in this garden and stay a while?” Linda’s garden is just such a place. Come and immerse yourself in the beauty and artistry that abound throughout this suburban property.

The 1910 house sits atop a small hill and its diminutive garden (5,000 sq. ft.) has been 23 years in the making.  The front yard features a large Japanese maple tree shading a rock garden on the steep bank. The north side of the house includes a path lined with a collection of hydrangeas and hollies. Tree peonies and oak leaf hydrangeas thrive on south side of the house.

In the secluded backyard, a pond creates a serene oasis surrounded by mature evergreens, trees, shrubs, perennials and climbing roses.  Numerous clematis vines wind through the roses and other supports. The deck and bluestone patio form garden rooms with seating areas and containers filled with annuals, tropical and succulents.

The last bit of grass was removed when the curb strip became a bed of pebbles where self-sowing plants are encouraged - including seeds from the neighbor’s sixty-year-old Dawn Redwood.

A note to PA Horticultural Society members: Linda’s garden was featured in an article in your recent Spring 2022 issue of GROW Magazine.

You are invited to visit the garden anytime between 10:00 AM and 12:00 noon. The homeowner will be available to answer questions. Adequate street parking is available. There is no restroom available onsite.
