"Expanding Your USDA Hardiness Zone: Lessons from the NYBG Ladies' Border"

Speaker:  Katherine Wagner-Reiss

The Ladies’ Border at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is a four-season bed composed of trees, shrubs, bulbs, and perennials. Originally created in the early 20th century, it was redesigned in the early 21st century by renowned garden designer, Lynden B. Miller. She conceptualized this border as an experimental showcase for tender plants, those not often grown in the New York City area because of winter hardiness issues.

Katherine Wagner-Reiss, who has her Certificate in Botany from the NYBG and is a volunteer tour guide there, will lead a virtual tour of this space, emphasizing the concepts of “pushing” the USDA plant hardiness zones and four-season gardening.

Katherine Wagner-Reiss received her Certificate in Botany from the New York Botanical Garden in 2015. She is a volunteer tour guide there, giving various tours including Notable Trees, the Forest, the Azalea Garden, the Perennial Garden, the Native Plant Garden, the Conservatory, and her favorite, the Ladies’ Border. In addition, she writes monthly blogs for the Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia, PA; these emphasize plant names, a particular interest of hers. In winter, Katherine is a volunteer tour guide at Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is also a prolific contributor of botanical photos to Wikimedia Commons.
