"Bryn Athyn Cathedral – Specialty Pruning"

Speaker: Eric Sternfels

Perched on the sprawling Historic Campus of The New Church is a medieval-style cathedral which has served its congregants and delighted visitors for over 100 years. We will learn about those who led the late 19th-century settlement of the New Church faithful, from downtown Philadelphia to this utopian enclave in Eastern Montgomery County, PA. Then we will discuss the gardens surrounding the impressive structures of the cathedral complex.

In the 21st century, the decades-old plantings required special care and management as the church officials recognized how the lush gardens could show off the beauty of the architecture. They also could reveal the theological values embraced by the New Church teachings. Our speaker will discuss the work of the specialty landscape professional, Rich Show, who has worked magic to creatively repair and infuse the gardens with focal highlights, successfully marrying the old with the new.

For this Virtual Wednesday Evening event, Eric has developed a slide presentation with illustrative images to introduce the scope of the specialty pruning performed by Rich Show of www.showgardensandcrafts.com. (Rich will be leading an in-person lecture and tour on this topic on June 12th at the Bryn Athyn Cathedral. Go to the Events Calendar to register.)

Eric is an HPS member who has previously served as SIG-Shade Gardening Coordinator. As a registered architect and designer of gardens, Eric’s presentations for HPS have included a talk/tour in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia on “The Art of Plant Placement.” He has also organized several garden tours at the Bryn Athyn Historic Campus.
