Joint Lecture at Haverford: Champion Trees of Pennsylvania

This event is a partnership between the Hardy Plant Society, Haverford College Arboretum, and the Henry Foundation. At 1:00 p.m. there will be a free tree tour of the grounds given by one of Haverford College Arboretum’s horticulturists. The lecture then begins at 2:00 p.m. in Sharpless Auditorium, followed by a reception. 

Description: Scott Wade, Pennsylvania state coordinator of the champion tree program, will introduce you to some of the largest trees of their species in Pennsylvania. Champion trees are determined by a point system based on three measurements and the largest known measured specimen of its genus and species gets to wear the crown of State Champion. Scott will discuss this fascinating program including measuring techniques and local champions. Biography: Scott Wade is the volunteer state coordinator of the Champion Tree Program with the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and has spent twenty-seven years in the horticultural field. Currently, he is employed as a certified arborist for Longwood Gardens.
