The Community Arts Center in Wallingford, PA is nestled in 4 acres of wooded property and lat e 19th century stone Arts and Craft architecture. Its gardens feature a sto ne tower, sculptures, mature canopy trees, a woodland trail, and mixed bord er plantings with a focus on beauty and biodiversity.
Its Caretaker is Austin Dodson who has been stewarding the buildings and grounds for the past 12 years. During his time at the art s center Austin has become motivated by the benefits our gardens can have o n surrounding ecosystems. Plants are chosen for what function they serve, a s much as for what they look like. Sustainable management practices are use d to nurture naturally occurring processes that help guide the direction of the garden.
His previous formal training was in the fine arts, which he continues to apply in his planting design sensibility at CAC. “It is imp ortant to know how plants will interact spatially over time, and how they w ill look in the context of what surrounds them, much like laying out the co mposition for a painting. Gardens change through time, and in designing the landscape I like to think that I am creating a living, moving painting ove r the course of the seasons.”
Gardens are an opportunity to connect to a larger context. Choices we make in our gardens can beneficially affect neighboring ecosyste ms.
Looking at how nature has taken care of itself since forever, we begin to apply some of the simp le things we can do in our own private spaces, like incorporating fallen wo od or leaves, into allotted spaces as habitat opportunities for insects and birds, where they are intentional and become part of the ecological garden .
