The 2018-2019 Seed Exchange is now open!

Since the fall and winter of 1993-94, the Seed Exchange has been one of the activities that makes HPS/MAG stand out from all of the other plant societies in the Mid-Atlantic region. Each year, as the fruiting season for a plant comes to an end, dedicated Society members collect the seeds and forward them, along with a description of the plant, to the Seed Exchange Team. The information is then used to create the Seed Exchange Catalog. Last year's annual edition (2017-2018) of the Catalog included 933 seed donations generously contributed by 58 gardeners, from beginners to professionals and included over 100 new seed varieties never before offered in our catalog.

Seed Donations

The Seed Exchange relies on members (like you) to collect seeds from favorite or unusual plants to provide to other members. If you have donated to the Seed Exchange in the past four years, we will email a list of the seed you have donated in the past to you in late August or early September. Rather than complete new forms, you can simply check off any seeds that you wish to submit again this year. If you do make changes to the description on the list of historical donations, please make them in a different color or highlight the changes so we do not miss your corrections. If you do not receive a history of your past donations please contact [email protected].

For any new varieties being offered by past donors or any donations from those who have not donated seeds in the past, click here to enter the seed information on the online Seed Donor Form.

Although we prefer that you use the online system, you may print and make copies of the Seed Donation Form and mail it to us. Click here to print the donor form. Click here for HPS/MAG Seed Exchange Donor Instructions and Tips.

The Seed Exchange team strives to make it as easy as possible for you to donate seeds. So, if you would rather, just email a spreadsheet or a Word document with your seed list and descriptions to [email protected].

The SEED DONATION FORM (but not the seeds) are due October 31, 2018. SEED DONATIONS ARE DUE JANUARY 8, 2019.

Mail seed donation forms to:
HPS Seed Donation Forms Processing
Jim Bobb, PO Box 269, Worcester, PA 19490

We must receive the Donor Form as early as possible to be able to publish the Seed Catalog and deliver it to you before the holidays. If you have any problems, questions or concerns please contact Carole Maher at [email protected] or 215-884-1662. Please don't worry about the possibility of crop failure. If that occurs, or if you discover some unexpected seeds, just let Carole know.

Seed Exchange Catalog

Requests for a printed catalog must be received by October 31 as well.
The easiest way to request a catalog is to be sure your profile is up to date. Just go to and click on Member Center, then click My Profile. Scroll down to the bottom where you will find "Request Printed Catalog" and enter your preference. Or you can contact Carole Maher at [email protected] or 215-884-1662, and Carole will make the change for you.

In early January, Society members can order seeds for a small fee. Later in January and February, dozens of volunteers meet at The Henry Foundation for Botanical Research in Gladwyne, PA to sort and divide seed into packets to satisfy the orders. Thousands of work hours and volumes of gardening knowledge go into providing this valuable exchange of seeds.

Any member can submit seeds or volunteer to clean and sort seeds. Not a member? Click here for the membership form.

To learn more about the Exchange, read "A Seed of an Idea and How it Grew" from a past HPS Newsletter.  Or visit the Avant Gardens Blog, GardenForeplay, for a 2014 posting titled "Collecting Seed for Seed Exchanges."

Working with the Seed Exchange is a fun way to meet fellow plant lovers in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

If you have questions or want to know how you can participate, please contact Carole Maher, [email protected] or 215-884-1662.

2019 Seed Exchange Workshops

Workshops to clean and package seeds for our Seed Exchange begin on Wednesday, January 30, and continue into February. The workshops are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm at The Henry Foundation for Botanical Research, 801 Stony Lane, Gladwyne, PA. Workshops are a great way to meet and chat with fellow members while we work. They are also a wonderful way to learn new things about seeds and seed propagation. Most importantly, the workshops are fun! Bring a lunch for yourself and maybe a snack to share. Coffee, tea, and water will be provided.

To schedule a workshop, please contact our volunteer coordinator Polly Garnett at [email protected], 610- 695-9135. Since the Seed Exchange workshops may coincide with the worst of the winter's weather, we will notify volunteers of cancellations with an announcement on the home page of the HPS/MAG website,, by 8:00 am of each workshop day on which the weather is a factor. For those without access to a computer, if the weather is bad, please call Carole Maher at 215-356-7377.
