“Native Bees of the Northeastern United States” Speaker: Angela Hartley
Bees bees bees!!! Learn about a current initiative to identify and track bee populations in the northeastern U.S. Learn how to identify some common native bees, including their unique characteristics and conservation status. And learn why native bees are important, why they are in danger, and how to protect them.
Speaker Bio: Angela Hartley, MA, MPhil, ELS, currently lives in Harrisburg, PA and is the business and editorial director of a specialty nursing journal headquartered in Washington, DC. A few years ago, she completed the Master Gardener (MG) program through Penn State Extension (PSE) and quickly became interested in insects in the garden, particularly native bees. She’s given presentations on flies in the garden, native bees, creating a pollinator garden, and obtaining pollinator-friendly status through the PSE certification program. She leads “Walk and Talk with a Master Gardener” tours at local parks and enjoys opening her own garden for visitors. The plantings on her property (with two pollinator certifications) continue to evolve as she increasingly focuses on gardening for wildlife. On her property, Willowdale Farm, she has documented 278 animal species, 234 of which are insects (60 species of bees). Angie is also an amateur photographer specializing in macro photography that is featured on her Willowdale Farm website.
