Fall Peony Care - Get Ready for Next Spring!

Fall is the perfect time to assess your peonies' recent growing season and to make readiness plans for the upcoming Spring. This will be a walking, interactive workshop on mature peonies in a home garden. With Thom Mrazik, owner of Goodly Gardens, we will be looking at different peony shrub types, discussing cleanup and maintenance steps, and observing a hands-on demonstration by Thom of peony dividing and transplant. Thom’s modest peony garden includes herbaceous, woody, and intersectional peonies.

We will:

1.  Walk around to inspect the end of season peonies

2. Discuss plant cleanup and relocation options

3. Discuss whether or not to divide or relocate plants

4. Observe a demonstration of digging up, dividing, and replanting herbaceous peonies

Goodly Gardens is a Penn State Extension-certified pollinator- and watershed-friendly garden. Thom completed the Barnes Arboretum horticulture program and is a Penn State Extension Master Gardener. He has generously given of his time to HPS/MAG, presenting several virtual talks, hosting numerous pop-ups, and contributing articles to our newsletter. He has published on Peonies at extension.psu.edu.
