The World of Roses with Wyck Rosarian Jackson Warren
The World of Roses? No, we aren’t viewing The War of the Roses movie, nor discussing The Wars of the Roses book by John Warren. Instead, we will be treated to a captivating presentation by Jackson Warren on the world of the rose. So, if you are dreaming of the beautiful and fragrant rose blooms of spring, come to the Free Library of Springfield for a presentation on the complex yet endearing world of the rose. There will be detailed descriptions of each class and variety of rose, from Gallica to Hybrid Tea, as well as a general overview of rose history and the famous flower's cultural impacts. After the hour-long presentation, there will be a 30-minute Q&A where you may ask a rosarian any and all of your burning rose questions.
Jackson Warren is a local rosarian who manages the Wyck Historic House's Rose Garden, known to be the United States' oldest surviving collection of roses in their original plan. Wyck House, in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, was the ancestral home to nine generations of a family of Philadelphia Quakers, from 1690 to 1973. Today, Wyck is a National Historic Landmark house, garden, and farm. Wyck is perhaps best known to gardeners for its Rose Garden. This is the oldest rose garden in our area, dating back to the 1820’s.
