“Buy” One, Get One Free! – A Visit to Two Splendid Spring Gardens in Wilmington, DE
If you attended the 2026 Member Garden Tour, you saw some of the beautiful gardens to be found in the Wilmington area. Join us for this opportunity to see two more wonderful Wilmington gardens as they unveil their spring colors. We will visit two gardens between 2:00 and 5:00 pm. The first garden will be open 2:00- 3:30 PM, the second 3:30-5:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at each garden close to the start time to get an overview of the garden from the homeowner before further exploration on your own. #1 (2:00-3:30 PM) – Marcia’s Garden – A Horticulturist’s Garden Marcia, the owner of this horticulturist’s garden in the suburbs of Wilmington has been building her garden for the last 18 years at her home, shared with her husband and two cats. Over 350 plants are cultivated here in about 2500 square feet. “My garden is a continual work in progress that gives me so much pleasure. Finding ways to incorporate many of my favorite plants in creative ways, while still maintaining a sense of design is always the challenge. Perpetually learning and trying new things, gardening is my main creative outlet, my church so-to-speak!” Specimen trees of Magnolia ‘Genie,’ Albizia julibrissin ‘Summer Chocolate,’ Pyrus pyrifolia, Parrotia persica ‘Kew Weeping’ and Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Soul Fire’ anchor beds filled with additional shrubs, perennials and bulbs. The garden also includes raised beds for vegetables, which typically include beets, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Marcia will guide us around the garden upon arrival. You may then wander through the garden at your leisure. #2 (3:30-5:00 PM) – Berta’s Garden – A Collector’s Garden A gracious, traditional brick home, anchored by garden beds, illustrates the passion for plants, art, color and form. A curated collection of over 70 Japanese maples, modern sculpture purposefully placed, and a complex palette of plants is sure to captivate any garden lover. The sunny entrance garden with established maples and conifers leads to the expansive shade garden bursting with textural perennials from bold to delicate, and plentiful blooms. The surrounding tree canopy creates privacy with a restful view from the terrace. Berta will give us an overview of the garden upon arrival. You may then wander through the garden at your leisure.
