Bryn Athyn Specialty Pruning Tour & Demonstration

The Bryn Athyn Historic District is an exciting destination that is now a National Historic Landmark Site. It is the home to three extraordinary residences for the family of industrialist John Pitcairn, Jr. plus one remarkable Cathedral complex which is the hub of a vibrant community for the New Church as conceived at the cusp of the 20th Century.

After nearly 100 years, the sweeping lawns and mature trees and shrubs envisioned by the iconic Olmsted Landscape Architecture firm needed the attention of someone motivated to remediate, rejuvenate, and refresh the landscape.  Our guide Richard Show (rhymes with ‘chow’) started as an experienced volunteer under the guidance of Head Gardener Danielle Odhner who allowed him the freedom to follow his passions.  After many years, Show has finessed his duties as a professional arborist to develop a focused expertise and philosophy that elevate the task of pruning to a creative art form.  He has studied and explored the lessons that can be taken from Bonsai Masters and learned how they apply to pruning at all scales. Rich and his wife, Anastasia, own and operate their company, Show Gardens & Crafts, with a trained team dedicated to taking garden problems and transforming them into signature highlights.

Registrants will be able to follow Mr. Show at a busy time when he can explain and demonstrate work in progress as he and his team ready the campus for a homecoming weekend. He will address the special challenges and opportunities of pruning evergreen shrubs like Yews and Boxwoods, as well as deciduous trees like Crape Myrtles and Japanese Maples. And he will offer tips and insights that will make us eager to sharpen our Felcos and get to work.

Members only. This Pop-Up event costs $15 and registration is required. Location details will be provided in e-mail confirmation upon registration. Maximum number of attendees is 20. Click here to register. Registration closes September 23rd.
