Bryn Athyn Specialty Pruning Tour & Demonstration

Perched on the sprawling Historic Campus of The New Church in Pennsylvania’s Huntingdon Valley, the medieval-style Bryn Athyn Cathedral has served its congregants and delighted visitors for over 100 years. The landscape surrounding the cathedral is one of sweeping lawns and mature trees and shrubs, designed by the iconic Olmsted Landscape Architecture firm. Since the start of the 21st Century, added focus has been given to the remediation and rejuvenation of the gardens surrounding the impressive structures of the cathedral complex. Dealing with the ancient shrubs and trees, along with more recent plantings, required the help of a creative pruning specialist. Our guide, Richard Show, is that specialist.

Rich will offer his expertise in this on-site lecture and demonstration. He will address the special challenges and opportunities of pruning evergreen shrubs like Yews and Boxwoods, as well as deciduous trees like Crape Myrtles and Japanese Maples. And he will offer tips and insights that will make us eager to sharpen our Felcos and get to work.

Richard Show (rhymes with ‘chow’) started as an experienced volunteer under the guidance of Head Gardener Danielle Odhner who allowed him the freedom to follow his passions. After many years, Show has finessed his duties as a professional arborist to develop a focused expertise and philosophy that elevate the task of pruning to a creative art form. He has studied and explored the lessons that can be taken from Bonsai Masters and learned how they apply to pruning at all scales. Rich and his wife, Anastasia, own and operate their company, Show Gardens & Crafts (showgardensandcrafts.com), with a trained team dedicated to taking garden problems and transforming them into signature highlights.
