Wander in Wayne Guymon’s Wonderful Garden of WynEden
WynEden is widely recognized as one of the premier gardens of the Mid-Atlantic Region. This superb ten-acre garden is anchored by a pond and extensive collections of azalea, rhododendron and hosta. Wayne and Doris Guymon bought seven acres in 1997 and soon began the ongoing process of transforming and expanding the gardens; an additional three acres were acquired in 2016. The Guymons have created a harmony of color and texture with an overwhelming richness of plant material carefully managed to emphasize order and serenity. The ten acres slope downward from the house to the main pond. The plantings around the main pond link in to those around a smaller pond and a system of waterfalls along Briton’s Run. WynEden’s extensive plant collections include more than 400 named varieties of hosta with 10,000 plants displayed in color groupings covering the long hill. The extensive azalea and rhododendron collection includes more than 7000 plants, a thousand of these are large, the balance being small to mid-size for an array of shapes and forms. The Asian area features a hand-dug pond, dry-stone walls, carved granite lanterns, and a large screening grove of carefully contained bamboo.
Under the shade of the mature trees in many areas of the garden thrive a stunning variety of plants from golden bleeding hearts to candelabra primroses and hellebores, from Jack-in-the-pulpits to exotic terrestrial orchids. With more than 4000 specimen plants, every part of the garden flows together with harmony and calming repetition. WynEden is a uniquely envisioned artistic achievement on a scale seldom seen in private gardens.
