A Year at Brandywine Cottage:
Tours of David Culp’s Garden through the Six Seasons

Season – Winter (December/January)

Winter is all about bringing light to darkness. Christmas lights are strung, and oil lanterns adorn the porch and picnic table, fires in the hearth and candles everywhere, both indoors and out. Bonfires are a winter bonus. The mahonias have budded up and the Leucothoe axillaris is in its winter color, a beautiful deep burgundy beside the golden yellow Cephalotaxus harringtonia. There are winter crocus and Galanthus also blooming, with bright berries of the Ilex verticillata. And January is a time for dreaming and inspecting, and a few light chores. [Photo by Rob Cardillo]

Tuesday, December 17 (Rain Date December 18); 10 AM – 12 Noon

Your Tour Guide – David Culp:

David Culp, a founding member of the Hardy Plant Society/Mid-Atlantic Group, has spent more than 30 years creating a sensational year-round garden that provides an abundance of joy. If you have read his book, you know that his garden is more than, well, a garden. It is about making our place in the natural world and enjoying the changing of the seasons. As he points out, we do not live in a static world, and gardens are not a static art form. Through this series, David will guide us to see more clearly the subtle seasonal transitions. By looking closer, we can learn how to create beauty and build a habitat for ourselves in the garden.
