Hardy Winter Flowers at Hedgleigh Spring with Charles Cresson

The winter landscape can be the most appealing of the whole year, particularly since it is the most labor free. The berries, bark, and silhouettes in the winter landscape are appealing, but the winter garden does not need to be limited to these static features. By gardening deliberately for the winter season, the landscape can be alive and growing with a succession of living, changing, fragrant flowers that can't be beat. These tough, but delicate flowers come from an amazing array of bulbs, perennials, and shrubs hardy in the Delaware Valley.

Charles will guide us through his private garden, Hedgleigh Spring, to learn about the amazing array of flowers that actually bloom during the cold seasons of the year. Learn how to grow them, and how to best place them to enhance the twigs, bark, and evergreens in your winter landscape with real flowers. Be prepared to find yourself adding items to your spring shopping list of must-have perennials, and to your fall shopping list for bulbs.

Charles Cresson is an avid gardener, plantsman, lecturer, consultant, and author. He studied horticulture in America and England, worked for the Royal Horticultural Society and has worked in many of our local public gardens. His family garden, Hedgleigh Spring, is an early 20th Century flower garden with an extensive plant collection and it includes areas specifically designed to highlight winter bloom.

Charles is the award-winning author of three books: Charles Cresson on the American Flower Garden, Ornamental Trees, and Rock Gardening. In 2001, Charles was awarded the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Certificate of Merit. And at the HPS/MAG Annual Meeting in December 2023, Charles was honored as the first recipient of the “Jim Bobb Memorial Award,” an award created to recognize members whose outstanding contributions and long-term service have significantly enriched and expanded HPS/MAG.
