A Visit to Conny and Jim’s Holly Lane Gardens
in Glen Mills, PA

Holly Lane Gardens is on two and a half acres where a center lawn sweeps back through an irregular, pie shaped lot bordered by trees and under planted with beds and long borders on all sides. Over the last twenty-four years Conny and Jim have planted over a hundred small trees, shrubs and conifers that have either flowers, interesting bark, or colorful foliage. With wetlands on one side and Black Walnut trees on the other side of the property, gardening has been an ongoing challenge. In order to have something blooming from early spring to late fall they planted many Dogwoods, Redbuds, Viburnums, Roses and Hydrangeas. Japanese Maples add both colorful foliage and textures. A deer fence keeps the deer at bay.

Close to the deck is a two-tiered pond, designed to maintain a natural balance using water hyacinths in the upper tier to filter the water for the larger, lower tier. The recently added rock and trough garden to the right of the pond is filled with a large selection of small and miniature hostas. A gate opens to the side yard which extends to three large Metasequoia.

This fabulous garden has an extremely large collection of hosta collected over 30 years and many other shade-loving plants and flowers. Stone and chipped wood paths wind throughout the garden. Conny and Jim confess that aging has inspired them to add more benches and chairs throughout the garden. They hope you will use these rest stops to fully experience their gardens and will also take the time to walk back to the gazebo and sit on the rockers where you can enjoy a smaller private garden. Light refreshments will be served on the lawn near the pool.
