Lecture: "The Art of Plant Placement" with Eric Sternfels

"Garden making can become a conscious art form when we try to understand how the human eye processes input. Only then can we be deliberate in our choices when locating plants with intentional goals. We can better create moods, define spaces, loosen or sharpen our focus when we select and locate plants of the right visual character. Learn how to use plantings, not just the man-made edges and surfaces to order your landscape. We will discuss geometry, patterns, and composition to bring an artistic perspective to re-ordering an existing garden or to begin a new one." - Eric Sternfels

There are many fabulous reasons for coming to this lecture at Ned Wolf Park in Philadelphia:

1. The first is Ned Park - click here to read a wonderful article about the park in Fine Gardening magazine.

2. Don’t get lost in the details of individual plant juxtapositions. Stand back and learn to be guided by a bigger picture.

3. How we organize plants in our garden shapes how our visitors think and feel. Learn how to guide their eyes and how to create a focal point and where to cultivate calm.

4. Movement in the garden can mean many things. For this program, we examine the intuitive movement of our eyes as we survey the garden.

Eric Sternfels calls garden making "an interesting, quiet labor," which has resulted in a unique landscape filled with usable ideas. With a background in architecture, he designed a garden in a long narrow space behind his vintage 1840s home in Philadelphia.
