Garden Tour at Northview in Ambler, PA

Like Alice you will be transported to a Garden Wonderland with a visit to Jenny Rose Carey's Northview Garden in Ambler, PA. Jenny is an author, educator, historian, plus renowned gardener. A lifetime of gardening on two continents has provided Jenny with a wealth of garden experience. Her Northview Gardens span four and a half acres and are described as eclectic. They include a dry garden, an herb garden, a farm crib, a vegetable garden, a rain garden, a sunset garden, a redbud allee, a collection of troughs, and last, but not least, a stumpery. Each of these separate areas have a theme or share certain environmental conditions. This allows Jenny to pick a palette of plants that suits the soil, sun, and water conditions while also adding the look that she is trying to achieve. The intensive plantings are the work of a creative genius.

The garden areas are linked by endless paths that allow you to walk around the gardens and contemplative spaces. Many of the gardens contain seats or benches placed where you get a quiet place to sit. There is a range of water features throughout the garden that bring sound, coolness, and water for wildlife. The whole garden is managed in a way that minimizes water use, uses environmentally friendly practices, and considers the impact of the garden on its occupants and the surroundings.

The area that is now Northview Garden was originally part of the Lenni Lenape tribal lands. It was heavily wooded with trails that ran through and connected settlements. After colonization the land was cleared and used for farming. There is some evidence that the land was part of a route of the Underground Railroad to free slaves, with a stop in a nearby barn basement. The property was purchased by Jenny and her husband in 1997 and has been enhanced constantly since that time.

Northview is a garden not to be missed. Join us to experience it for yourself. As an added enticement, Jenny has generously offered to provide tea and coffee in “proper cups,” and to answer all your garden questions!
