This year’s annual meeting will again be at Jenkins Arboretum.  Our guest speaker will be Nicole Juday Rhoads from PHS, who many of us know from our volunteer work at The Flower Show and elsewhere.  Nicole was also one of the garden hosts at last year’s popular members-only garden tour.  We look forward to welcoming Nicole to relate the fascinating history of Philadelphia’s preeminence in horticulture.
The Cradle of American Gardening: 300 Years of Philadelphia Horticultural History

Gardening has been part of the regional identity of Philadelphia since its inception more than three centuries ago. This talk examines some of the factors that have contributed to the development of world-class horticultural institutions in our region and the elevation of gardening to its highest form by professionals and home gardeners.

Nicole Juday Rhoads has a deep background in public horticulture. Past positions include working as a project manager for Greater Philadelphia Gardens, running the Arboretum School at the Barnes Foundation, and curating the rose garden at Wyck Historic Garden in Germantown. Her writing has appeared in many garden publications and she has been a regular contributor to PHS’s Grow magazine. As Director of Engagement at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, she works to strengthen existing relationships with individuals, organizations, and institutions through engagement and special projects, and seeks to introduce PHS to new audiences, building an appreciation of their important work throughout the region.
